Dear Editor:

Like most in our community, I have been distressed and horrified at the destruction and devastation of Haiti and its people. The suffering is undoubtedly horrendous and indeed overwhelming, but Haitians, a people who have demonstrated, historically, a capacity to overcome adversity, will survive this latest challenge.

The response of the international community to this tragedy is commendable. In time, the organized chaos will pass and aid will be distributed efficiently to ease the immediate suffering of those most affected.

U.S. President Barack Obama has been preaching to Africans that the reasons behind the continent's underdevelopment are largely self-induced. The United States' President has conveniently forgotten that one of the reasons that he gave for not participating in the Durban II anti-racism conference was that Africans were going to raise the issue of reparations for enslavement, colonialism and neo-colonialism.

Obama and other commentators are unreservedly pushing for the implementation of liberal capitalist democracy in Africa. They view this type of political system as an exemplary model for popular participation in national governance. This proposition is problematic on a number of levels.

Dear Editor:

To become a Canadian citizen a permanent resident must take an oath or affirmation to support the monarchical system of government.  Indeed, even citizens must also take such an oath to hold elected office at any level. This oath states:  "I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfill my duties as a Canadian citizen."

Dear Editor:

We should all be proud of Thando Hyman-Aman's appointment to head the historic Africentric Alternative School. This young woman, who has demonstrated excellence in the field of education, has an unquestionable love for and commitment to our community.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with her on several community-related initiatives. During this period she was always hard working and dependable. Indeed, she often played a leadership role on many committees.

Dear Editor:

Many thanks to Share for reminding us that learning is a community affair.

I and many sistahs and bruthas are grateful that you provided us such vital background information on the appointment of Thando Hyman-Annan as principal of Toronto's planned Afrikan-centred school.

Thando is indeed the brilliant daughter our village raised up to defeat adversity, and she does the ancestors proud.

Like Share, we now want the world to know that we will continue the tradition of Afrikan-centred excellence that produced such uncommon competence and commitment in the person of our younger sistah, Thando.

Our mothers thank you, our fathers thank you, our village thanks you!

Dear Editor:

Re: Ron Fanfair's article, "Jerome Award Recipients 'Lifts Us Up'", April 30, 2009. Am I the only one who found Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff's comments at the Harry Jerome Awards estranged from truth when he lamented that Marlene Jennings was the only Black MP in the House of Commons.

This is the man whose political career was founded on the removal of Jean Augustine from Cabinet and then from the seat that she worked so hard to win as the first African Canadian woman to be elected to the federal parliament.
