Letters

Dear Editor:

The service that you provide and the contribution that you make to civil society is impossible to measure. I would not want to contemplate a Canada with Share Newspaper.

You play a critical role in analyzing and raising awareness of important issues, in serving as a conscience when people in positions of authority or influence seem to be falling short, in encouraging civic participation when our indifference could do us and others a great deal of harm, in recognizing the achievements and contributions of members of the community, and in spreading the word about worthwhile causes.

Dear Editor:

I am so happy to see this article in a magazine that reaches many new Canadians. The current Harper government rode a wave of conservative sentiment that largely came from the immigrant community. This is such a terrible mistake.

Dear Editor:

Re: 'Tropicana to receive $2 million in gov't funding' (Share, September 01, 2011).

I must confess that my first reaction was disgust: "Please, don't insult me."

As your piece mentioned, the Scarborough-based agency, Tropicana Community Services Organization (TCSO), initiated its call for a building fund in May, 2005. Apparently, we should be grateful to the Liberal Party of Ontario for taking six years to see the light - doing so in an election year, no less.

Dear Editor:

Members of The Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) mourn with the rest of Canada, the death of New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jack Layton on Monday August 22, 2011.

Mr. Layton was a friend to the JCA and a friend who treated our community with respect and honesty. He will be missed by us all, no matter what our political association.

His strong values, strength, devotion to the Canadian people and to public service will not be forgotten.  Even in his final hours, he wrote a letter of encouragement, hope and optimism to all Canadians. He thought of his fellow Canadians to his last breath and will always be an example of how one should and can contribute to the betterment of one's nation.

Mr. Auguste:

Many times we can be beneficiaries of something around us, something that is so much a part of our lives, we no longer see it or even recognize what it means to the betterment of our lives and community.

In fact, our expectations, unconscious, is that it will always be there, ever present.

Share Newspaper is one of these things, these institutions so encompassing we accept them even as we accept the inevitability of weekends and friendship.

Dear Editor:

The news of the $12 million grant that was given by the Government of Ontario to the organizers of Bollywood's International Indian Film Academy clearly demonstrates that Caribana doesn't only suffers from cultural racism when its comes to funding from the different levels of government and the private sector. It is actually anti-Black racism, which determines the funding predicament of the Caribbean festival.

How is it possible for the government of Ontario to only give Caribana an annual sum of $400,000, while this festival generates over $400 million of economic activity in Canada?

The Bollywood festival will inject an estimated $26-$30 million into the local economy.

Hi Arnold:

Down here in the boondocks we get so little news other than the exploits of Rob Ford and the like.

It seems to me that CAG has a good claim under the intellectual properties laws for Caribana.

I don't know who is on those boards but if they are all in favour of continuing Caribana, no matter what it's called but Caribana is what it is known as far and wide and that should be kept. Why don't the CAG and the FMC join forces to fight the a-holes at Silly Hall.

Re: Remember Caribana's roots - Share, June 2, 2011

First, I must say that I loved this article. It really ticks me off that Scotia and its fellow hustlers would have the nerve to take over Caribana, rename it, the whole nine.

People from the Caribbean have made such a large contribution to this country and this whole Scotiabank takeover is like a "box" (Yes, that's right. Box!!) in the face.

I remember seeing Caribana organizers on TV looking a little nervous because they didn't have much funds to work with. I remember thinking, "How come Caribana's broke, when there are so many businesses that benefit?"

Dear Editor:

Thanks for the stand you've taken on CARIBANA. Share couldn't have said it any better.

This fight is far from over, and CAG, the legitimate and legal owner of the CARIBANA Trademark and Festival, is encouraged by the support that your paper is generating.

The African Canadian Legal Clinic has stepped forward to assist the CAG in this fight for this extremely important symbol of our Black and Caribbean contribution to this city. Black Youth Taking Action (BYTA) has also joined us, and we are sure that other community-minded and just people will come on board as well.

Dear Editor:

African Canadians are sending a message across this land that their culture should not be taken for granted. The need for sending this message is urgent. Their intellectual property of Caribana, the brainchild of the CCC/CAG, in inconceivable form, is being gutted. The message of African Canadians is clear: Caribana is theirs with all its embodiments. It is an integral part of their gift to Canada and it should not be broken up. The parade is the Caribana parade, so let it be!
