You are looking forward to a long and healthy retirement. But how much will it cost? Here are five tips to help you figure out how much money you will need when you retire.

1. Start early - "It's never too early to start planning for your retirement," advises Chartered Accountant Alan Wainer of Soberman LLP in Toronto. "Sit down and think about when you want to retire and what your retirement goals are."

How are those New Year's Resolutions going? Did any involve exercising more? If they did (or didn't) keep reading. Last week, a patient of mine told me she just took her exercise regiment to a new level - it now involves two resistance training and two Zumba classes per week. I asked why? She said she and her boyfriend had gained nearly 10 pounds over the Christmas holidays and they were now engaged in a "Couples Challenge" to see who could lower their BMI (body mass index) over the next several weeks. She went on to say they are using BMI instead of pounds because "men lose weight more easily than women".

Happy New Year!

There are two reasons I love the start of a new year. First of all, it is the perfect time to reflect on the year that has passed - to reflect on the changes in our personal lives, in our families, in our community of Canada, and in the world. It is also a time to ask ourselves, "What role did I play in the cause and effect of these changes?" And, most importantly, "What did I learn from it all?"

Holiday celebrations have become powerful family traditions.

Somehow, Saint Nicholas and Christmas trees found popular support and gained traction here in North America.

The legend and lore of Saint Nicolas came with Dutch immigrants. Saint Nicholas was a patron saint of children who lived in Turkey in the 4th century and became one of Europe's favourite saints due to his benevolence toward children. In the U.S., the first appearance of Santa Claus was dressed in bishops' robes. After solidifying his fan base, in 1860 Harper's Magazine started running illustrations of Saint Nicholas/Santa Claus and he gained meteoric popularity with families; especially children.

Three weeks ago, I interviewed Tony Hope, who shared with us his rather alarming discovery and diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes and how it has changed his life. This week, another courageous man from the community, Simon Samuel, has a story to share. I admit I am impressed with the openness and honestly in which these men have shared their stories with us, how their experiences have motivated them to become their own health advocates, doing whatever they can to help themselves and others.

This is Simon Samuel's story about prostate cancer.

How did you first find out you had prostate cancer?

One interesting - albeit non-scientific - way to gauge someone's comfort level with the state of the economy is to ask how much they plan to spend on holiday gifts. In good times, people tend to spend more generously; during rough periods, they scale back.

If you're among those looking for ways to manage your holiday spending while still finding meaningful gifts for your loved ones, here's some advice.

First, consider your overall finances. Before spending a dime on gifts, step back and calculate how much you can afford as a portion of your overall budget. Consider questions such as:

North Pole, H0H 0H0: In response to a request received this week by the North Pole, more than 9,000 postal elves have been dispatched to help Santa answer the thousands of letters that are arriving each day. November is increasingly becoming known as Movember. If you have noticed thicker, longer, perhaps more scruffy-looking moustaches and goatees on the faces of the men around you, they may be participating in Movember, a month dedicated to increasing awareness of men's health, specifically prostate cancer, in part by men committing to grow their moustaches for the month of November.

Prostate Cancer Canada (PCC) and The Movember Foundation (TMF) are the men's health partners of Movember in Canada.

Has someone every saved your life?  It's a catch 22 question because you don't wish to be in a life threatening situation but if you should find yourself in such a calamity, you would want the right person to be there.  This is the story of a gentleman who was living his life, unknowingly, on a very fine line until a fateful afternoon at the Malvern Mall. World Diabetes Day was marked around the world last Monday, November 14, by diabetes associations, public health units and community groups through community forums, risk assessment screening and general information sessions on diabetes.

Local community diabetes champion, Kathy Nelson, spent the morning at a diabetes forum sponsored by the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) and Novo Nordisk and the afternoon doing what she does best, speaking to a large group of community members about diabetes at TAIBU Community Health Centre.
