More ‘colour’ needed in T.O. fashion industry

Toronto's mainstream fashion industry desperately needs an infusion of colour, says British-born supermodel, actor, TV host and hip-hop star, Sam Sarpong.

Sarpong was in Toronto for LG Fashion Week, Canada's premiere event, and also to receive the Rising Star award at the sixth annual Planet Africa gala last Saturday night.

Bagai undergoing second MRI on knee

Canadian cricket captain Ashish Bagai will undergo another Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) test today to determine the extent of a left knee injury that has bothered him for the past year and forced him to cut short a winter stint in Sri Lanka's premier league.

The wicketkeeper/batsman underwent an MRI last month in Sri Lanka where he was playing for Ragama Cricket Club. He said doctors are yet to definitively diagnose the injury.

Toronto honour for champion South African athlete

South Africa world champion athlete, Caster Semenya, whose stunning world track & field 800-metre victory in Berlin last August was mired in questions about her gender, will be honoured in Toronto later this month.

The Toronto-based South Africa Women for Women (SAWW) will honour the star athlete for sporting excellence at its annual awards ceremony on November 27 at the downtown Sheraton Hotel.

She easily won the gold medal in the middle distance event in 1:55.45 shortly after it emerged that she had been told to take gender tests.

Olympic wrestler happy to be RBC ambassador

Freestyle wrestler Ohenewa Akuffo thoroughly enjoyed her first-time Olympic experience in Beijing last year even though she finished 10th in the 72-kilogram weight class.

Just over a year later, she's preparing for another Olympics. As a Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) community ambassador, Akuffo will get the opportunity to participate in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics torch relay and spend a week at the 21st Games to be held from February 12 to 28.

Gemini Award for first-time nominee

Dr. Jordie Isen admits he did not know what to expect when he showed up at last week's Gemini awards that honour the best in Canadian television.

Neither did his artistic daughter, Tajja, who was a first-time nominee.

"I have been to several of these things and I have seldom had a sense as to how the vote would go," said Isen, who manages the talented actress, songwriter, pianist and vocalist.
