Fundraiser for Haiti
"A Night of Liberation", a fundraiser held to raise funds for a soup kitchen in Cite Soleil, Haiti, and an educational tour of Ghana, Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso, will be held on Friday, September 2 at 7 p.m. The event is meant to draw awareness to the poverty of children faced in Haiti and Western Africa. Grants for choreographers
The Grants for Choreographers program of Toronto Arts Council provides support to professional independent choreographers for the research/ development and/or staging of new works or works-in-progress. Grants are based on the recommendations of an independent jury of dance artists. There are two levels of funding available. They are: choreographers with a minimum of five publicly performed pieces who may apply for a maximum of $5,000; those with a minimum of 10 years experience and at least eight publicly performed pieces may apply for a maximum of $8,000. Sickle Cell Support Group
A support group for adults living with sickle cell disease meets twice monthly in Toronto. Meetings are facilitated by social workers, and assisted by physicians and an experienced practical nurse. For more information about the group, call Kathy at 416-813-4943.

Assistance for Mature Workers
A job assistance program for experienced workers 45 years and older has been launched by the Human Resources Development Commission (HRDC) at the Jamaican Canadian Centre, 995 Arrow Road. The program is specially designed to assist participants find employment with workshops focusing on occupational goals, skills and qualifications and barriers to employment among other issues. There is also one-on-one job placement assistance. Participants needing specific training and skills will be referred to appropriate training programs. Caribbean Meals on Wheels
The Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) in partnership with York West Meals on Wheels has expanded its menu to include a Caribbean menu. This service is now available to those who reside in the old city of York (east of Humber, west of Dufferin). Homeless Prevention Project
West Toronto Community Legal Service has launched the Homelessness Prevention Project (HPP), in partnership with Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood Centre, STOP 103 and CONNECT Information Post. Services provided by the Project's two outreach workers include educating tenants about their rights and obligations and advocating for tenants in difficulties with their landlords. The Project will also offer public education forums on the Landlord and Tenant Act. Fresh Start
Fresh Start, a free 10-week program for women who have great business ideas and who need help developing them, is now available for single mothers receiving social assistance. Youth Program in Pickering

Tune in to Toronto 1, channel 15 in the Greater Toronto Area every weekend for two television programs aimed at the Caribbean community. Island Express is a one-hour entertainment program that will feature music videos and interviews with artists of the Reggae, Soca, Calypso, Chutney, Dance Hall and Zouk genres. Island Express airs on Saturdays at 11 a.m. Focus Caribbean is a one-hour show filled with sensational feature reports on people, places and events direct from the Caribbean. Support Group
Voice to I.M.P.A.C.T. offers support to Christian and non-Christians. The group is committed to mentoring youths; helping families who are challenged; assisting in custody/access/family/civil law and education issues. They offer abuse awareness workshops and support for anyone involved with the Children's Aid Society of the judicial system. They assist in breaking the cycle of mental and physical incarceration. Volunteers Wanted
The Distress Centre of Scarborough is looking for volunteers who are willing to commit at least 15 hours a month to the Centre. The Centre receives an estimated 1,500 calls from people who are lonely, distressed and suicidal. To qualify, volunteers must have a friendly voice, an ability to listen, and a caring attitude. Dorothy Ley Hospice seeks volunteers to help the terminally ill or the bereaved. Volunteers may work for a few hours, even one day each week, and are asked to make a commitment of at least three months. Volunteers will get 30 hours of training. The Employment Resource Centre of the Collège des Grand Lacs is now located at the heritage Stewart Building, just a few steps from the Queen's Park subway station. All its services and resources are available in French and English, and many services are offered including Internet access, interactive self-teaching CD-ROMs, photocopiers and fax machines. Workshops are also offered to help people find their way around the Toronto area job market. On Wednesday evenings, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., there are networking get-togethers. York Community Services' Housing Help Centre and Homeless Prevention Program is looking for landlords and homeowners who have vacancies or wish to know more about their program. The free service, which has been in operation since 1985, links landlords and tenants searching for accommodation. Sistering is a woman's organization that provides practical and emotional support for homeless and low-income women. Mental Health Support
Family Association for Mental Health Everywhere (FAME) provides supportive Counselling, Education and Advocacy to family members of seriously mentally ill consumers. The association is currently recruiting volunteer board members. Requirements for board members include being a close family member of a person with a severe mental illness of any diagnosis. Ideally board members will have at least one specialized managerial or professional skill, have experience with community organizations and be good team players. Canadian Multilingual Literacy Centre
English as a Second Language literacy programs and First Language literacy programs especially for adults who have less than a grade nine education are being offered by the Canadian Multilingual Literacy Centre. Delta Childcare Network offers a job search training workshop. Learn how to write a résumé, interview techniques, and to access the hidden job market. Get assistance with job placement, skills assessment and learn how to use the Internet. Delta also assists with career placements and childcare if requested. South Asian Family Support
South Asian Family Support Services is a non-profit organization, providing services to new immigrants. The organization provides information and referrals regarding employment training, OHIP, SIN number, advocacy, interpretation (various languages) and Counselling. FEE seeks Volunteers
The Foundation for Educational Extension (FEE) is looking for reliable office volunteers to help with administrative work and exciting fundraising activities. Those interested in volunteering should have good communication and telephone skills. Word processing and typing skills are needed for some positions. Training is available. Teen Parents and Pregnant Teens
Free programs are being offered for teen parents, pregnant teens and their children at the Toronto Public Health York Office, 524 Oakwood Avenue (south of Vaughan Rd.). On Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. pregnant teens are invited to attend. Programs are offered for parenting teens on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There are free dinners, food vouchers and one-to-one support on both nights along with other programs geared for each group. Older Adults needed
Toronto Intergenerational Partnership requires volunteers citywide. If you would like to spend one morning or afternoon a week volunteering with babies, toddlers, preschoolers, parents or elementary school students there are opportunities available in the areas of reading partners, storytellers, nutrition, gardening, media, arts and crafts, English as a Second Language tutors, program coordination and more. Survivors of Violence
The North York Women's Centre holds meetings for women who have faced any form of violence. Meetings are held every Thursday. The group focuses on support, increasing understanding of the impact of violence against women, and exploring healing options. West Indian Volunteers
The West Indian Volunteer Community Support Services (WIVCSS) is a registered non-profit community based volunteer organization, primarily serving high-risk children, adolescents and their families in North Etobicoke. Humber River Regional Hospital seeks mature adults to be trained as Palliative Care volunteers to support terminally ill patients. If you are non-judgmental, tolerant of various cultures and belief systems, tactful, discreet and have good communication skills, then this may be for you. There is an extensive 30-hour training program with a minimum commitment of one year. Locations are Jane/Lawrence and Finch sites and require at least three hours per week. Job Connect is a free program that assists Scarborough residents to find jobs. The program provides counseling, employment, employment skill workshops and referrals to work placements. Individuals have access to job postings, computers, the Internet, fax machines, a photocopier, telephones and support during their search. Help for Unemployed
Centennial College's community resource centre serves the unemployed as well as new Canadians seeking English instruction. Individuals looking for work are provided with computer, Internet and faxing facilities. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and offers "Job Connect" for people 16 to 24 years. "Youth at Work" offers workshops that teach essential employment skills and job placement and support. Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) provides English as a second language lessons to newcomers. Harambee Clinic
Harambee Centres Canada's Medical Walk-in Clinic is located at 149 Gerrard Street East. Experienced medical doctors from the African-Canadian community are available for treatment and consultation and to "deliver effective and reliable health care." Clinic hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The services are covered under OHIP, and reasonable rates are available for non-OHIP members.
